About Us

Hello! I’m Grace Miller, a 31-year-old educator living and working in the vibrant city of Tianjin, China. Originally from Portland, Oregon, I moved to Tianjin nearly five years ago, drawn by its rich blend of history, culture, and its dynamic urban environment. Since then, Tianjin has become not only my workplace but also a city that continuously inspires my personal growth and my passion for travel.

As an educator at an international school, I have the privilege of teaching young minds from diverse backgrounds. I specialize in language and cultural studies, helping students connect with the wider world while appreciating their own unique heritage. Teaching here is more than just a profession; it’s a chance to foster curiosity, empathy, and critical thinking. The city’s diverse population and fascinating history provide a perfect backdrop for this mission.

One of the reasons I love living in Tianjin is its strategic location — just a short distance from Beijing, with easy access to both modern urban life and historical sites. But what truly excites me is exploring the city’s surrounding areas and hidden gems. My travels here are not about rushing through tourist hotspots, but about immersing myself in the stories and experiences that give each place its character.

I have developed a unique travel perspective that blends education with exploration. When I visit nearby places like the ancient water town of Wuqing, the historic Five Great Avenues, or the coastal beaches of Binhai, I focus on understanding the cultural and environmental context. I love walking through old neighborhoods, observing local life, and reflecting on how history shapes present-day identity. Each journey becomes a living classroom, expanding my appreciation for heritage and community.

Travel for me also involves connecting with nature and slowing down. I enjoy weekend trips to places like Ji County’s Taihang Mountains or the tranquil waters of the Haihe River, where I can hike, reflect, and recharge. These moments of calm amidst nature remind me how important it is to balance the fast pace of city life with quiet contemplation.

Food is another vital element of my travels. Tianjin’s local cuisine, famous for its delicate dumplings and savory snacks, offers a delicious gateway into regional culture. Sampling street food stalls, chatting with vendors, and sharing meals with friends add layers of meaning to every trip. I’ve found that food connects people in ways that transcend language and background.

My approach to travel parallels my educational philosophy — both require openness, curiosity, and a willingness to embrace new perspectives. I encourage my students to be explorers not only of the world but of their own identities, and I try to model that in my own life. Every trip I take, whether a short day excursion or a longer adventure, fuels my passion for learning and deepens my understanding of the world.

Living in Tianjin has also influenced how I view community and belonging. The city’s blend of traditional neighborhoods and modern developments shows how cultures can coexist and evolve together. I’ve become involved in local volunteer programs, cultural exchanges, and language workshops, which enrich my sense of connection and purpose.

Looking ahead, I hope to continue growing as an educator and traveler, integrating my experiences into innovative teaching methods that inspire global citizenship. I’m excited to explore more of northern China’s diverse landscapes and cultures, always seeking new stories and lessons.
